The following is a list of some of the Congregational histories published in Sydney Presbytery. If you know of more to be added to the list, please contact the Webmaster. To inquire about a copy of any of these histories please contact the Pastoral Charge involved.

 

 

 

1. Trinity United Church, Sydney  1900-1975 “Commemorating the fiftieth Anniversary of the

   United Church of Canada” 1925-1975, by Irma Duchek and Margaret Windsor, 29 pages.

 

"In the year 1899, the Dominion Iron and Steel Company was organized and began to build its blast furnaces, coke ovens and rolling mills immediately to the east of Muggah's Creek. The result was a very large addition to the population of this part of the city. Since many of these people had come from St. Ann's, most of them were of the Presbyterian faith."

 

 

2. Carman Recollections “A brief history of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines, N.S.,” by Audrey Ferguson and Nettie Johnston, Hantsport: Lancelot Press, 1984, 56 pages.

 

"Carman church was originally Methodist, and the origin of Methodism in Sydney Mines dates back to an early period in the town's history....1813...Sydney Mines was a rambling collection of shacks and log cabins where the coal miners and their families lived -- There were no roads, only paths through the woods from door to door. Near Sutherland's Corner there was a log cabin of two rooms where dwelt some Christian people who welcomed others to their home so that together, usually on a Sunday afternoon, they could pray and sing hymns together..."

 

 

3. United Protestant Church of Sydney River “The First Fifty Years 1951-2001,” by A. Iver Gillis, 216 pages.

 

"In February 1951 a group of community minded citizens met at the home of Mrs. Albert MacDonald to discuss community, school and church affairs in the Sydney River area. ...A decision was made to immediately hold another gathering and invite men from various Protestant churches in the area to seriously consider building a Protestant church."
