St. Andrew's

The pastoral charge is St. Andrew's serves two congregations: St. Andrew's in Sydney and Knox Church, Blacketts Lake.

St. Andrew's United Church located at 40 Bentinck Street in Sydney. This is the third building for the congregation of St Andrew's. It was built in 1910 and officially opened on June 25, 1911.

A feature to note about the church is the Casavant organ which has played a large part in music at our Sunday worship services for many years. Our organist Mr. S. Peter Fraser takes pride in maintaining and playing this beautiful instrument.

St Andrews also has a carillon of 10 bells in the bell tower which are played weekly by our own Sara March. The largest bell weighs about 2050 lbs. and the smallest bell is 500 lbs. The Sanctuary has a capacity for 1,100 people and is used as a venue for various events, the latest being Celtic Colours 2008. Another feature to note is the large stained glass dove window in the rear of the Church. These doves were made by several members of St. Andrew's Church and donated after they were on display for an Ecumenical Church Celebration. The other 16 beautiful stained glass windows are dedicated in memory of loved ones. Recently the church was designated as an historic site by the Municipality of Cape Breton.
