Trinity United Church had its beginnings in the latter part of the 19th century with the establishment of a Presbyterian congregation in Whitney Pier known as St. James. Many of its members were of Scottish descent and had come to the city from Victoria County, Cape Breton.

As the population of the city increased around the development of the steel industry, more churches were formed. Victoria Methodist was made up of many members from Newfoundland.

St. Mark's Presbyterian was also established. The Pier became more and more consmopolitan with each ethnic group forming its own church. These included a Ukranian Catholic congregation, Polish and Italian Catholic parishes, and St. Philip's African Orthodox church. There was also a Jewish Synagogue, St. Alban's Anglican parish and the English speaking Catholic parish of Holy Redeemer.

St. Mark's Presbyterian and Victoria Methodist both became part of the United Church of Canada in 1925, and by the late 1930's all three churches had amalgamated to form one congregation. They named it Trinity.
